Peace Of Mind September 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm a bit of a technophobe but found this easy to install. I've previously been using a free antivirus software but thought this might offer better protection. This is a firewall as well and it only allows you to access "safe" sites but will ask permission if it thinks you're trying to go to an unsafe site. It doesn't seem to have slowed my laptop down at all.
reasonable protection for the average user September 15, 2008 Microsoft have now come up with their own internet security system OneCare which includes antivirus, antiphishing, antispyware and firewall. in addition to your average internet security system OneCare allows you to easily schedule disc defragementation which is handy for me as it takes such a long time - i like to just set it to defragment every month to help make my system run more smoothly. Similar to other high profile internet security systems, OneCare allows you to install and protect up to 3 pc's as well as updates for one year. For the average user this will do just as well as any other internet security software but with the addition of allowing backups as well as pc optimisation. A good competitive piece of security for your system.
Decent all-in-one solution for those who don't want the fuss September 7, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Windows Live One Care is a good, robust product - it installs with the minimum of fuss (uninstalling any previous antivirus / firewall software, although asking first), takes little setup (runs straight out of the box in dependable Microsoft fashion), and does a solid job of protecting your PC (it had no problem detecting potential virus infections on my computer, and the firewall seems secure enough). Its ease of installation and use could be seen as a good or bad point, depending on your viewpoint - power users will want the tweaking capability offered by individual products, whereas the average home user will be overjoyed to find out that there is relatively little to do to keep Internet nastiness at bay. It's non-intrusive, sitting in your status bar for most of the time, and when it does call for action, the interface is slick and a joy to use.
It includes several nice features outside the general Internet safety arena, namely data backup services, PC tune up and boot-up time speed-up - I did notice a slight improvement in my boot-up time, so it isn't all hype!
Bear in mind that, like most commercial PC protection suites, it's a subscription product that gives you a year from installation out of the box, but after that will require renewal for virus definitions and the like. Not a problem if you're happy to pay for the all-in-one solution - although with several free, separate alternatives available, more comfortable PC users will probably prefer the less costly option.
For users who want neither fuss nor worry, this is ideal.
Surprisingly good? Had to edit the review! September 6, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I waited a while before reviewing this to make sure I was satisfied with the product. I'd previously used Norton Anti-virus and ZoneAlarm firewall, two products I rate very highly, so when I had the opportunity to replace them with a product by Microsoft I was a little sceptical but decided to give it a try.
Pros: Integrates seemlessly and feels like part of Windows (XP). Clear and tidy menus which add to those already existing in Windows. I've noticed a performance increase in online games after replacing the two aforementioned products, which is very important for me. The installation was fairly straightforward, all I had to do was create a Windows 'Live' account and input the PIN. It mostly configures itself. I like the way it mimics ZoneAlarm with program internet access alerts, either allow always all just this occasion (which may be an updated feature as another user noted an absence of this - try looking for a checkbox in the menus!) Also there is an online photo-backup feature which although I haven't used, sounds useful for later.
Cons: There is slightly too much automation for my liking. Some features, like the tune-up, cannot be turned off completely, only delayed. ID protection is limited to the anti-phishing filter, other applications have ID info filters which prevent custom info from being transmitted e.g. name, passwords, address, full IP. Port-access control freaks will need to look elsewhere, the scope here is limited although different protocols can be enabled/disabled. The tune-up feature is very basic and combines a group of features that already exist in Windows.
In the end I chose to stick with this instead of Norton 360, which was a real surprise. Although I'd used Norton products before, the OneCare feels less clunky and helps with PC performance. It only just loses a star for missing some ID features that are becoming common in other applications.
EDIT: I've never edited a review before but felt I had to in order to point something out. Although OneCare claims to detect spyware, it does not consider tracking cookies to be spyware. A recent free online scan detected 67 tracking cookie threats which OneCare had ignored. Although low danger, cookies like these can slow down a PC. If I could I would remove another star from this product - 3 stars now.
Simple and straightforward August 28, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
One Care is a fully comprehensive anti-virus program, firewall program it also has backup and restore utilities and system tune-up options. I have usually used separate products for each of these functions but decided to give One Care a go after purchasing a new computer with Vista Home rather than XP on it.
The initial installation could not be easier (unlike when I have tried McAfee on a laptop) and the programme integrates seamlessly with all my applications: Word Excel Outlook Etc and then provides simple and easy to understand popup (much like you get with Internet Explorer) when it detects any problems changes etc whilst running your PC. Another bonus is that it seems to take up less memory/processor speed than other antivirus/security programs I have used in the past, so system performance does not seem to be adversely affected by its installing.
Any problems etc are displayed via a simple traffic light systems ie Red Amber Green (although I have had no red or ambers as yet). The actual user interface i.e. changing stuff etc is extremely simple and easy to use and I would think that most home users will find it less daunting than many other internet security products that are available. The other options i.e. backup tune up etc seem to be easy to set up and you have the option of backing up to a central locations or a network drive e.g. a USB drive and when running on Vista it gives you various options to speed up the running of your pc.
Overall, one care seems a good straightforward product that is easy to install and use. I would certainly recommend it for anyone looking for an integrated Internet security solution at a good price with the minimum of user interaction required, with the added bonus of it being a microsft product so it should therefore integrate with all your windows applications.
