Amazon.co.uk Review
Originally a product for the Amiga range of computers, Blitz Basic was a massive hit among the homebrew games programming crowd with its easy-to-learn language constructs and advanced graphics and sound handling support.

Now it's been ported over to the PC, allowing a new generation of wannabe games programmers to exercise their creativity and give the professionals a run for their money.

From the off it's only fair to say that Blitz Basic is rooted in the 2D world--there's no support for 3D here so budding Half-Life programmers are out of luck. That said Blitz Basic tackles 2D games more effectively than anything else on the market today.

File creation is carried out through a simple yet effective development environment which is equipped with a comprehensive online help manual which covers command syntax, introductions to various programming concepts and more.

A debugger is also provided to allow troublesome code to be stepped through and a full variable monitor keeps a watchful eye on the program internals so you can see if anything is going wrong, and where it's occurring.

The completed code can then be compiled into an executable file which can then be distributed. The output code is incredibly compact and Blitz makes extensive use of DirectX 7+ for its display routines keeping file sizes down and compatibility high. The speed of the finished code is pretty astonishing too--thousands of objects moving onscreen at any one time are possible without any noticeable slowdown on more powerful PCs.

It's worth bearing in mind that Blitz Basic is not one of those awful tools which you throw some graphics and an MP3 file at and expect a Shoot-em-up to fall out of it at the click of a button, it's a programming language and as such may not be to everyone's taste--that said I managed to get a passable Space Invaders out of it in less than two hours.

However, if you're brave enough to take the plunge and have the time to learn enough to start creating, Blitz Basic is a fabulous package and worth every penny of the asking price. --Chris Russell

5 out of 5 stars Blitz...the best way to make games!   May 30, 2002

Blitz Basic is ultimately the best way to make fast and easy computer games on your PC. I've already made lots of small programs, and am now moving on to RPG-style. Blitz can create any style of computer game. The programming is much, MUCH easier than Visual, and it had lots of extra free graphics and sound with it! It's brilliant for game-making (and I'm only 13!)

5 out of 5 stars It's like this   May 8, 2002

I've been using Blitz 2d for about 2 years, It's fantastic, the beauty of it is you will pick it up in no time if you've programmed before, and if you haven't you'll have a lot of fun learning it. It's just a joy to use, it's fast, it's user friendly and has one of the best online communities. This baby is worth every penny.
- Regarding the font issue posted by another user here, this can be easily sorted by going into the CFG folder in your Blitz directory and editing "font_editor" to replace the custom font with any font you like and setting "edit_blkcursor 1" will give you a more visible cursor.

5 out of 5 stars Do what many people only dream of   January 17, 2002

Blitz Basic has allowed me to do what I only previously dreamt of: to create games easily.

I've been programming for years but was always scared away from making a game because there was no single, easy to use tool to do the job and still allow a big audience for your game.

I ran into Guildhall Publsihing at ECTS a couple of years ago and picked up a flyer regarding this product. I got the demo when it was released and was blown away, so I bought the retail version when it was released.

I can now make my gaming ideas reality in a fraction of the time it would otherwise take. I am now only limited by my imagination - as the box says.

If you want to make a game of any size or complexity, you have to try this language out. I cannot recommend it enough.

1 out of 5 stars Blitz 2d First thoughts   December 24, 2001

Having tried to write games using Visual c++ I soon realized that life is too short for for all the hassle that this involves. I tried Dark Basic but it's not so good for 2d games as it is for the 3d variety.
The Div Game Studio has a nice programming language but it is a dos program.
Blitz is VERY fast and I only criticise one thing.. the editor font is small and the cursor sometimes difficult to see. I solved this problem by going into 800 x 600 mode.A method of changing the font size in the editor would help. Otherwise Blitz is a great program.

Nice for 2d\3d Action type games, which you can knock-up in a couple of hours BUT no use for programming strategy type games.
A excellent piece of software (WORMS, SUPERSKID Marks were writing with Amiga blitz basic 2)
A good xmas present for the budding programmer.
