Maybe it was me, but.... August 3, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I took advantage of the 1 month free trial having read professional review. After some deep scanning it set about my system, tweaking internet, cleansing my registry and mending my disk. All fine so far. I then started to experience very slow windows start-ups, agonising freezes on program loading, blue screen starts to fix my disk (again). Every day another EMail urging me to purchase, including a sale day at half price. Meanwhile system gets slow and less stable. Then I have a brainwave....deinstalled product. My system now runs much quicker and is far more stable. If you do not have this product you have made a wise omission in my opinion. But maybe it was me...
Keeps your PC tuned up nicely - fixes tons of issues July 11, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
System Mechanic 08 Standard (PC) I've been using this since v5 and it just keeps getting better and better. On installation, it will scan your system and report back a list of issues found. You can click 1 buttom to fix them all, fix them 1-by-1 or ignore the list completely. Everything (apart from disk defrag) has an 'undo' option and the installation disk is also an emergency boot & repair disk in its own right. Support is good and the product is easy to use. Each purchase can be installed, legally, on 3 systems - so you end up covered at home. When building a new PC, I install AVG8, Spyware Terminator and System Mechanic ahead of everything else. In addition to the 'problem finding/fixing' parts of the software, it also has features to 'cover your internet browing tracks', improve system performance (memory defrag, hard drive defrag, internet speed improvement etc) and all of these can be intelligently scheduled to run in the background. I read recently that they now have over 20 million customers and that companies like Dell will start to pre-load System Mechanic on their PCs to reduce support calls and improve the customer experience. Best part ? You can download the free trial first - before you buy - to see if you like it for 30 days before coming back to Amazon to buy it (with the really useful recovery CD !)
WATCH YOUR STEP! April 26, 2008 15 out of 21 found this review helpful
Having just completely re-installed windows after a massive system crash I am now able to review this product. I bought through a high street retailer at the same price as Amazon. I run Windows XP and have memory and processor way over the system requirements. I had a couple of errors on start up and log off, and some sluggish performance issues and so decided to run this program. The only thing it was successful in achieving was 3 blue screen stop screen errors and the need to re-install windows from scratch causing me to loose the lot, thats a 3/4 full 160 Gig hard drive. Watch your step when using this program, I consider it to be suicide and have binned it, lost the cash I paid, but I learned a big lesson, use windows or Microsoft programs to fix errors and do clean ups, not these idiots who create VERY dodgy programs. Hope this helps USE AT YOUR OWN RISK
back on form (updated) March 3, 2008 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
Introduction
Those of you who use any type of Windows computer performance optimisation utility are likely to have heard of Iolo System Mechanic at some point.
Recent history
If you rated the version 6. *, as a great piece of software, but thought the version 7 was the software equivalent of an outside toilet, this is a fantastic upgrade. As a enticement to buy this one, a free- update to the latest version 8 is given via the web.
First impressions
This new version (i.m.h.o) is a return to form. The whole utility has been subjected to a visual upgrade that is very well done that is more than cosmetic. It's easier to find your way around than earlier versions.
More details in the changes
The 'dashboard' is still there, and from this screen you can easily see 'problems outstanding', 'active care'. The power tools that allow an automation to a whole raft of solutions to solve problems such as 'Pc Accelerator', 'PC Repair', 'PC Clean-up, 'PC Security'. However if you value the options to select each individual parts then you can click on 'individual tools', but there are so many I am unwilling to list them.
Using `Windows Task manager', + `processes' this uses when at rest, around 38 Mg of Ram, and around 8 Mg of page memory. But when you use it it's a lot faster than version 6.*, its really quick in comparison. However please note I have also increased my systems RAM to its maximum limit, so this may have as much influence upon its speed of operation?
Summary
If I could sum up the changes in a 'physical' analogy, it's a tool that responds to use with superb 'clicking' into place as you use it. Yes you could say it's not a totally new product, but (i.m.h.o) it's enough changes and improvements in speed alone to make upgrading from 6. * worth considering and perhaps buy it. Overall I feel this software would improve security and performance for reasonable cost.
