Poor Rainbow Fish has had his scales stolen and only you can help. Solve the puzzles and complete the challenges to find the thieves and make him beautiful again. You'll meet friends along the way such as Head and Toe (the twin fish) and there are numerous games and activities to keep young minds entertained while teaching valuable skills such as recognition, problem solving, experimentation, logical thinking and creativity. A print shop lets you colour pictures on screen or print for later, and two difficulty levels make sure that younger children are able to join in the fun.

However, calling it an interactive book is stretching it a bit. I thought it would be like the Living Books series, which my daughter loves, but it is really much more like a game.

There are no written words on the screen, which makes it less than straightforward for the accompanying adult to work out what to do. Progressing the game relies on randomly clicking the different fish until you get the right one (the game is quite rigid in what it wants you to do) and then listening. Presumably this is so that the child can play the game without having to be able to read, but the music sometimes drowns out the instructions, so then it's down to mum to work out from the objects on the screen what the task is. The child has to be supervised/helped to play it... which some people might say is not a bad thing! But my 4 year old can play all of the other games she has aimed at her age group by herself.

On a personal level, she particularly likes the drawing application you usually get somewhere on these packages, but the one provided by Rainbow Fish is surprisingly lame!
