Waste of Money June 21, 2008 First up, it isn't made clear that this is not a boxed package - it's an OEM disc. That meas that a) there's no serial number given which you need to install it on your PC (there is one supplied but you have to trawl through the disc and have eyes like a hawk to spot it); and b) If you want a manual you have to go to Ulead's website and download one - at 23Mb.
Once isntalled it seems to work fine and is easy to learn and intuitive to handle - until you start upping the ante and start asking it to really perform. Then it starts running out of virtual memory and constantly falls over. It's mind-bogglingly slow writing DVDs and to cap it all, Ulead don't support version 8 any more. Do yourself a favour, save your pennies and buy something decent.
Started great, becomes terrible. August 14, 2005 8 out of 15 found this review helpful
Being new to video editing, when i got Video Studio 8 six months ago I was blown away by the cool transitions, filters and easy to use storyboard. Now though, it is just frustrating me. My computer keeps telling me I am low on virtual memory when i use the software, but my computer still has most of its hard drive free. Also, the programme keeps shutting down from 'abnormal programme terminations'. Also, the Cool 3D SE, supplied free with the software, does not work on Video Studio. I am so annoyed, and will not be buying Ulead again. Do yourself a favour and don't buy this.
Powerful, Easy & Fun July 7, 2005 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
If you are serious about video editing on your PC, but don't want to have to wade through manuals or attend your local film school, VideoStudio 8 is for you. At this price-point, there is something of a checklist for video editing software to complete in order to compete, and VideoStudio manages it: lots of special effects, transitions, text effects, easy-to-use timeline and audio functions, picture-in-picture and so on. It support DV camcorders and captures video from them quickly and easily. It can encode your movie and burn it to DVD complete with menus, background music, etc. It also supports basic still image animation. Included in the package is a special edition version of Ulead Cool3D, which can be used to create 3D effects that can also be used in videos. I've not done much with this, so can't comment on it, but it adds good extra value. There are some SmartSound tracks, which can be used to add background music appropriate to a scene. There is also a book on shooting good video and a full printed manual - much more useful than a PDF file on a disc! Presentation is pretty slick and most functions are easy to find. It runs at a good speed with minimal disk access most of the time. Preview rendering of your project can be a little ropey, although quality can be varied depending on how much processing time you want it to take. Final rendered videos are of great quality and can be produced for website use, DVD video, etc. VideoStudio's greatest asset is its ease of use - it is hard to beat if you are looking for a product to produce great video, quickly and easily. It is also extremely stable and you get everything you need out of the box, there is no need to purchase any extra components. I can't recommend VideoStudio enough, out of all the video editing suites I have tried, this is one of the most powerful, reliable and easy to pick up and use that there is.
Very competent product April 27, 2005 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I was so frustrated with the limitations of the Sony editing software supplied with my Sony MicroMV camcorder that I originally bought VS 8 to use with it. But it completetly failed to capture footage from the camera.(If anyone can tell me how to do this, I'd love to hear from you). In a moment of weakness I bought a cheap, second hand JVC MiniDV camcorder to use with the software. Good move!! The programme was a cinch to load and captures MiniDV footage effortlessly via a Firewire. It took a couple of goes to find my way around the software and I only found the manual and instruction video helpful after I'd messed around with some actual footage for a couple of hour. I am now a big fan and I still haven't got round to using all of the functionality. For my purposes the titleing, effects, transitions and filters are a breeze to use and the ability to manage audio is very impressive. It is also completely stable, I haven't had a single crash or hang (although I do have a pretty well specced PC). At the current Amazon price this product is very, very good value for money.
Excellent value for such a powerfull package April 19, 2005 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
I have always been interested in video editing and so it was an obvious but daunting step for me to move from my analouge suite into a digital (non-linear) suite. Ulead has proved to be a dream to use. I only bought it to ease me into the digital era of video editing and then planned to buy a higher priced piece of software, but for a long time did not need to bother. Video Studio 8 is a powerful, effective and a well thought out piece of software that everyone will be able to use. Being considered a professional for a number of years now, and haveing been doing video editing for quite some time with such a cheap pacakge I would more worried about people taking business off me as the package, although not professionally priced, has all that a professional needs. It gives other programmers such as AVID & Pinnacle the heave-ho if you want to get started. Being a pro, I now have Adobe but it was not needed for a long time. An excellent piece of programming at an extreemly good price.
