Ultimate? Rock Guitar Scale Finder November 7, 2008 Firstly, this IS an excellent reference book and great value for money. The reason I'm only giving it three stars is this... When you open the book and read the opening pages you may be instantly put off. The reason is, it starts talking about tablature and says "if you don't know... try consulting a music theory book such as...". In other words, "if you don't understand this then you'll want to buy another one of our published books on the subject.
My gripe is this, why didn't the author add a couple of vital pages on music theory to encourage the reader from the outset? Instead he starts by introducing a subject that might put you off. After all you want to understand what you're reading right away right?
Great book that could be a classic if they just took the time out to add a glossary, or basics in music theory to refer to.
For the Money Excellent August 20, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Ive been playing about 25years - I know nearly all the stuff in hear - but as the guy before - I bought it to make up the amount for free postage. It really is all you need in a book and the last few pages gave me a few ideas: modes and the relative minors and parrellel modes. dont worry if you dont know the modes - do you know the minor and major pentatonics in five positions ? If not this is a good reference book for them - though its not a walk through course - more a summary page on each scale. For the money - if nothing else it gives the intermediate player a road map.
BARGAIN!!! June 19, 2005 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
I got this book having felt dissatisfied with the teaching of scales in 'Rock guitar for dummies', and wasn't expecting much for the price, but this book covers a wide range of the more common scales and also quite a few modes, and more importantly explains them quite well too. All in all for the price, this is an excellent reference book, my only gripe is that the scale patterns aren't illustrated all along the neck (they are only shown in 1 or 2 adjacent positions), but what do you expect for under 3 quid??
