Better than the rest... January 19, 2003 A really good introduction to VBA. Works great as a springboard of motivation to learn the basics and make VBA work for you. Not quite convinced that the CD is of great value, but the book has spurred me onto greater things. It's all written in plain English, and unlike other books, progresses one step at a time.
Excellent - For Beginners July 9, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I think it is important to emphasise based on other reviews that this book has been designed for complete beginners in VBA. In light of that seems to have achieved its purpose very well. The explanations of the code are done with a view to help you learn firstly where to get help, secondly to understand the rationale of the code and how it works rather than deal with every scenario. My view is that the book does very well to explain the concepts to a level so that the user has a grounding to advance. I find this style much more readeable then a book written as a reference book which requires a grounding in the basic concepts in the first instance anyway. I have already found several places at work where I can implement the code almost directly as found in the book and by understanding the concepts I am beginning to make the code even more effective. The structure covers concepts which for a non programmer give a practical understanding of the flexibility Visual basic and once again I feel the concepts are very well explained. The chapters are also quite independent so that you don't necessarily have to have understood all the concepts in earlier chapters to pick up benefits from later chapters. For someone who is learning without much assistance or teaching aid (like myself) this book was absolutely invaluable, especially if you have a thought process which only needs a push in the right direction or a few ideas to take things much further. Other goods books on Excel and Access VBA are by Wrox publishers but these are very detailed (even the beginner series).
Great place to start February 8, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book doesn't try to replace the help, but shows you how to use help. I use this as course notes for my training business. It doesn't make you an expert, but then its taken me years. The examples are a bit obscure sometimes, but they do teach you a wide range of skills to get you started.
OK for beginners and main stream applications.... October 5, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
....but if you want to do anything a bit unusual then it's back to the Microsoft developer web site. This book covers a lot of ground, and introduces all the things you're likely to need. Unfortunately it doesn't give enough detail on any of them to let you do much besides the excercises in the book.
Pretty good August 27, 1999 If you know VB, it will help. The author explains the flowery stuff in detail, but dances over what I considered to be the meat of Excel VBA. Don't expect to finish the book and think you can code in Excel.
