5 out of 5 stars Very good even for the beginner   November 28, 2008
I have to confess at being at bit of a novice at desktop publishing, although I am pretty confident on other applications. So most of the functions available here are over my head a bit. However I can see this is a pretty polished product all in. The function I was most interested in was the PDF import/edit. I must say I am very impressed. Very easy to import PDFs, edit, reformat and resize pictures, and then output as required. I didn't actually think this was possible, so top marks for that!
I will spend a bit more time learning more of the options. But for that area alone, happy to give 5*

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value for money and very reliable product   November 27, 2008

I've been a user of serif products for years since the early 90s esp Pageplus. This is my upgrade from X2. X3 seems to take a little longer to boot up
but I dont mind this. You get the usial oblong box asking what you'd like to do such as create new publication, use a template, import pdf, browse tutorials.
In the templates you get Photo albums, Christmas cards, Calenders, Eater cards, Frames and Mattes, Business cards, invites, fathers Day, Novelty cards, Valentine cards
Special Occasions etc even postcards. There is a section on CD labels, Covers and DVD covers. Theres flyers posters, PDFs, Stationery section
Catalogues, Business forms, Home novelties, A section on logos, and Web publishing.

I've used this software mainly for doing CD DVD labels, If you have a CD printer
that prints CD and DVD labels direct on the disc then your laughing cause what I found worked quite well was instead of having
to buy blank discs with printable surfaces you could buy ANY type of disc and stick a label on and print direct to that label with
the disc in the printer. Do buy good quality labels its not worth bothering with cheap ones they come off or don't stick properly at
all and can damage your drive in the end getting stuck inside or your printer. I like the Calender feature where you can publish
a full 12 month calender on one sheet of card/photo paper with your own background in or choose from the hundreds suppied
with PPX3. As usial Pageplus is very easy to use and just as easy as its competitor Microsoft Publisher and if you do get stuck
all you do is press F1 for help. Their is 3 designs of calendar you can choose and of course you can mess about with the settings
and change the background colour, fonts etc. you can also choose which year so if the program is 2 years old it will let you
change it to say 20010 or later in the future lol. If you want to save money by printing your own Christmas cards their is 25 different
designs or if you like you can pick a design and change the background/picture etc. put your girlfriend/boyfriends face in a santa
outfit for instance lol good fun indeed. Another great feature is PDF files importing them and saving documents to PDF and PDF Slideshows,
it handles Acrobat 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 and PDFX/1 and PDF/1a. When producing text their is a handy proof reader and spell checker. If you new to
PPX3 you can pop into the Tutorials (adobe flash player) under the help menu and their is sections on creating a real estate flyer, a scrapbook, Bussiness
card, newsletter, greeting card, PDF form, sales flyer, CD/DVD label, address label, Auction Catalog etc etc in PDF format. As always Pageplus is pretty
reliable and I cant remember if its ever crashed on me at all during the years of use.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to use DTP   November 25, 2008

This is a very easy to use Publishing package which will have you getting creative quickly.
The program is a low price way to edit PDF files and this was one of the features that attracted me in the first place. Unfortunately the PDF files which I wanted to edit came up with errors as they were not fully compatible This is the reason that the product has been given 4 and not 5 stars.
As a competitor to Microsoft Publisher this package seems to be easier to start and comes with a huge library of templates which will give you ideas and layouts which you can use as your starting point.
Finally I have been using WebPlus X2 Website Maker (PC)for sometime and have found that to be an excellent way to publish to the web. PagePlus X3 has a very similar look and feel to work with and so is the perfect partner to your creative tools on your PC.

5 out of 5 stars Best of British   November 25, 2008

Buy British! QuarkXPress and InDesign may be the market leaders, but if you buy them you could be wasting money on products that offer little more than PagePlus X3 and are more challenging to use.

Serif's user interface for PagePlus X3, for example its context-sensitive toolbar, is a lesson to Quark and Adobe in how to do things. You can tailor it, too, for example by creating your own keyboard shortcuts.

But the benefits of PagePlus don't stop at the interface. A wide range of templates is provided, to get you started with basic layouts, and the included design elements make it easy to develop your layout. Word 2007 support makes working with text a great deal easier for many of us. Tables are now handled like spreadsheets, and AutoFit adjusts point size to make text fit its container or path.

If you don't have suitable graphics to import, the drawing tools are very powerful. These include SmartShapes and Connector Lines that are clever enough to make you grin with delight. Many styles and effects are available too. And, if you are designing a logo, the Logo Studio will guide you through the entire process.

When it comes to output, you can print locally, including double-sided folded booklets, or send to a bureau as a packaged publication (if the bureau uses PagePlus) or in PDF/X-1a format.

That just gives you a taste of PagePlus X3. I could go on at length about the impressive new Image Cutout Studio that lets you create complex masks, the soft-feathering crop tool, and so on. PagePlus is a highly effective package that is also great fun to use. Don't hesitate to buy, unless you are into the most complex of professional DTP projects.

4 out of 5 stars Versitile and good value piece of software   November 24, 2008
PagePlus presents itself as a viable alternative for a number of other pieces of software.

I receive and view a number of PDFs, without this software there is very limited tools available (aside from buying Adobe Acrobat for about 700!) for editing PDFs, so I feel the ability to edit and save PDFs is priceless and a great property of the product in itself.

Aside from the PDF editing abilities, PagePlus presents itself as a viable alternative to programs such as Microsoft Publisher, Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress. It's very affordable, and having used all of the aforementioned programs, I can confirm that it compares very well and would be suitable for beginners and pros alike.
