It's Expensive but your paying for the Best! June 6, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Photoshop is expensive, I will agree. And most probably well out of the budget range of most people. However lets be honest it is the best. You don't pay Rolls Royce money for Lada accessories. It is the product of choice for the Photographic & Graphic Design industries.
You're not going to go ahead & buy Photoshop CS3 if you don't take Graphic Design or Photography seriously.
Just about every book you'll buy on Photoshop will tell you, they can't go into every aspect of the program. Why? Because quite simply it's so comprehensive. There are many other systems on the market which will all do what Photoshop CS3 does. But each of these programs only does part of what the whole of Photoshop CS3. So you'd actually have to buy three or four programs to do what this one program does. Which means spending basically the same amount of money for less comprehensive systems! Even then you will find you won't actually get the same professional results.
It's not the easiest thing to learn at all. It really is a steep learning curve, and I'll agree that Adobe could do an awful lot more to help. They do have great little "How To" videos on their site. But I personally would be willing to pay a little extra for a comprehensive set of "How To" videos on the whole system. However that would probably mean a good 30 hours worth of videos (or even more!).
It really is a case of you get what you pay for. You're paying big money for a MASSIVE program. In fact it's so comprehensive I think I'm personally only going to scrape the surface. But the results I've already had with just tinkering are amazing! I've created seriously professional results that have impressed friends & family. When I actually learn how to do what I want I'm going to be deliriously happy. I honestly think 5 stars are not enough for Photoshop CS3.
There are many ways to buy Photoshop CS3 much cheaper than the 800 quoted. If you read Keith Josephs review he gives a few examples. I honestly don't think it's over rated, and this seriously is a product that you pay more & get an awful lot more. If you take your photography, or graphic design seriously. Then really there is no substitute. And if you want to do Photography or Graphic Design as a career then there is no other system.
It's the photo editor of choice - but sadly just too expensive for most home users November 5, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have Photoshop CS3 Extended - although I got it as part of Creative Suite Design Premium (with 'Macromedia' Dreamweaver/Flash (web creation), InDesign (DTP), Illustrator (drawing) and Acrobat (pdf editor) thrown in. With Photoshop 'extended' you get everything in Photoshop CS3, plus tools for editing 3D and motion-based content and performing image analysis [although freebie ImageJ offers more of the latter]. To be honest the old Photoshop CS2 is adequate enough for most of the image editing I do, and paying extra for a 'deluxe' edition is a bit irritating. I couldn't go to an older version than CS1 though as I find the 'shadow/highlight' tool just too useful (bringing out detail in shadows, e.g scanned film), and that wasn't in Photoshop 7. Photoshop CS3 seems to start-up and run faster than older versions (as claimed by Adobe, although it's hard to imagine it could get any slower than CS2's start-up time). You naturally still benefit by using a fast multicore PC with 3-4Gb system memory though. I get Photoshop CS3 `free' via work, and we get massive educational discounts (for departmental use at university). However you can get a pretty hefty discount on Photoshop extended yourself if you have a student/schoolchild in the house (from Primary School to degree level), so definitely check out adobe.com's Education Store and Amazon for that version instead if you qualify. This educational licenced version is identical to this retail version, but is for non-commercial use only.
There's so much imaging editing power in Photoshop Extended you should visit adobe.com for more details. Photoshop has a steep learning curve though, largely due to the rather poor Photoshop help, e.g. you can ask any question and you get quite good detailed help on the correct command/palette to use - but it typically never tells you where to actually find that command in the menu system ! Intermediate photo editing users, and people using their own money, should probably stick to the superb but simplified 70 Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 - which you can buy with it's sister Premiere Elements 4 (video editing) as a double pack (again an cheaper educational licence is available). I use a few copies of Adobe Elements 6.0 on peripheral shared PCs where the high cost of an additional Photoshop Extended licence isn't justifiable. Also have a look at the powerful Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 10 that comes in at a few pounds more than Elements 6.0 and, although aimed at professional photographers on a budget, it is ideal for anyone with an expensive digital camera.
So the industry standard photo/image editing software with no real competitor - simply the best, but sadly also at a very high price unless you qualify for that educational discount - although we pay far more than those in the US for an identical product. That said, if it was my own money, I would [and did] buy cheapie Serif PhotoPlus 11/X2 for all my home image editing and scanning needs, as it does a heck of a lot for 5% of the price of this Photoshop Extended. Photoshop CS3 is pretty much a must though for professionals in the workplace, and this Extended version might offer you something extra that's useful for the additional outlay.
