Amazon.co.uk Review
Whether you're creating a monthly budget or planning a complex investment portfolio, Microsoft's Money 2002 is a strong and dependable tool for managing your money and helping you reach your financial goals. Easy to set up, with features such as Web integration and online services providing you with access to your financial data as you shop, invest or pay bills, you'll soon have your household budget and accounts in order.

Many of the new features that make Money a worthwhile financial companion revolve around better Web integration and online services. The new MoneySide bar follows you around as you surf the Web, providing you with access to your financial data. You can also synchronise your Money data with MSN Money, which allows for up-to-date investing, banking and financial planning information. Creating charts and tracking reports have been greatly improved, as well as the ability to send these reports via e-mail. Finally, a new Bill Setup and Edit feature provides users with a central storage area for all bills and billing histories to be kept and managed.

One of the great things about Money 2002 is the scalability on offer to the user. For example, if you just want to see how much a holiday will affect your monthly budget, the program offers a one-time expense feature to use during that month. If, on the other hand, you'd rather create a six-month plan to purchase a new car, Money 2002 will help you set up a budget to account for this expense over time.

Overall, Money 2002is a strong and dependable tool for managing your money and will help you keep your financial affairs in tight order. --Chris Ryan

4 out of 5 stars Invaluable, if you can maintain the records!   May 17, 2002

This package has transformed my finances - I can now track every penny and I'm better off as a result. The software is simplicity itself to set up, as wizards guide you through the whole process. Regular bills are even entered automatically for you! Most banks allow you to download your statement directly into Money, and automatically compare the bank's records with your own. The only problem I've had is that it takes a bit of willpower to enter every transaction you make, but it's worthwhile. Some of the extra planners, wizards and charts seem excessive, but for the price, who cares?

5 out of 5 stars Personally its quality...   April 3, 2002

I think this product is the bees knees. Ok, Im an IT engineer but that didnt mean i needed any of my skills to work this program! Its dead simple to set up, and makes accounting finally a bit 'exciting'? Well maybe not that exciting, but it sure beats starring at a spreadsheet, and dropping off to sleep into your coffee. I was up until 1AM happily sorting my incoming and outgoings, now I have a set budget, my bills/debts are all considered, and i finally know how much i can spend each month without racking my brains at the cash machine in Sainsburys! I felt threatened by all the bills and fluctuations in ingoings/outgoings before i got my accounts computerised, but now i feel right on track. Ive even set up a budget for my car bodykit, and know exactly when i can afford it. Lots of features, lots to look at, so even when ive done the accounts im still able to look at fancy graphs to give me a bigger picture of my financial status. Ok, you need to work around a few 'auto' options to get the results I needed but nothing at all complex, and i didnt even have to use my calculator. Top program, get this if you really want to sort your finances out the interesting way. May be a little too modern for the old fogies who'd prefer a spreadsheet :)

1 out of 5 stars Unnervingly complex to set-up, and hard to customise   March 17, 2002

I've had this product since November 2001, and every time I brace myself to finally "get it fully working as I want it" I give up through frustration. It is too complex for the computer non-nerd, and - frustratingly - it's Category Groups are pre-set, so you cannot add new ones or even change the titles of those provided. (Although you can invent your own Categories) The manual looks pretty, but is fairly useless in practice at answering your queries, as is the frustratingly slow on-screen help, which is (even in expanded mode)squashed into a maximum of 3 inches down the side of the screen. Like so many Microsoft products, it does everything except the very thing you want. Avoid it.

1 out of 5 stars Power where you don't need it   January 27, 2002

I'm not really sure who the programmers had in mind when they wrote MS Money. Possibly an obsessive, rich nerd who likes to gloat over his net worth in fancy charts, who is nevertheless gullible enough to be steered onto MSN's financial websites for advice. Setup is easy enough, although you will need to have all your financial details at hand, including bank statements, mortgage, share details, loans etc. You're urged to join up with MS Passport, which may be fine if you do lots of internet shopping. You're invited to list your financial priorities, which are then used to personalize your Money Home Page, which loads when you run the program. This offers you a list of reminders, and possible tasks, such as investing for retirement, planning for the unexpected, getting out of debt, etc. You're also reminded of any payments coming up or overdue, and shown graphs of expected cash flow, income and expenses, and similar. Once installed, and until you learn how to stop it, the program has an annoying habit of popping up every time you access a financial web site. I would have thought that the main use people have for a computer with their finances is balancing their bank account, but MS Money is very unwieldy in this role. At the end of the day, it really doesn't do a good job of assisting in balancing your account. I find the old spreadsheet I set up far quicker and easier. I found the program unnervingly keen to go online at every opportunity, including every time I sign on, so I don't know what it intended to do with my financial details. The help function was not, the program was not intuitive, it hung on several occasions, and was very intrusive. I'm going back to my spreadsheet.

3 out of 5 stars Good software but terrible "manual"   January 26, 2002

I bought this to enable me to keep track of basic spending and account balances, at which it is very capable. However....the manual is utterly useless. I know the online help is quite comprehensive but it is not quite the same as flicking through a proper set of instructions. I had to delete my first three goes at setting up my accounts because nothing seemed to make sense. Also, if you have set up bill reminders and download a statement (containing the bill payment) from the bank without previously telling Money you have paid the bill, all hell will break loose in your account balances.

It IS rather good for tracking share prices though.
