1 out of 5 stars forget it   November 30, 2008

rave reviews, looks good and seems to have the speed issue sorted, or so you think, fooled again! All seemed well then noticed a sudden slow down, oh dear oh dear, a scan with the lowly rated windows live onecare revealed 4 virusus plus other issues, alittle surprised to say the least, now trying Bit defender, pah web pages load quicker, don#t waste your time and don't trust the hype, try Kaspersky. Bit Def or Trend, nuff said

5 out of 5 stars Quick, effective and less intrusive than before   November 26, 2008

I'd used Norton before but had often found it clunky to use and infuriatingly slow.

The more recent models, however, have proved to be a pleasant surprise and the latest incarnation has been the best yet in my experience.

Installation was really fast and required very little effort on my part. Scans are much much faster (quick - under a minute, full - about 20mins) and the feature which removes tracking cookies is a particularly useful time-saving feature. The panel is easy to understand and updates seem to come more quickly and with little interruption to functionality too.

In short, a great improvement which has left me a happy customer.

4 out of 5 stars Better than before   November 20, 2008

Norton 2009 is a vast improvement on its predecessors. It has built on the positives of previous versions and Symantec actually seem to have learnt from criticisms levelled by many in the past, including myself.

This version is quicker to install, update, and use than any of the previous versions I have used and it is less pedantic in addressing programmes it hasn't registered before. It still seems to offer a great level of protection, much better than many of its rivals, and blends well with XP and Vista.

Another great improvement in NIS 09 is that the price is down significantly from previous years, even for the multiple computers version which previously has been ridiculously expensive. The fact that Amazon has it under half the RRP is even better. A great price and a vastly improved Internet Security programme.

4 out of 5 stars Norton   November 20, 2008

Another year and another Norton Internet Security package.

This was installed on a PC which had come with a 90 day trial of Norton Internet Security that was about to end. The installation and registration process was quick and straightforward and the update scan and download was likewise. The software appears to run quietly in the background - Norton claims that the software is "fast and light". This probably has more to do with most modern PCs having at least 1GB of RAM than the software being any faster or lighter than previously. The software can be used on 3 PCs per household and lasts 12 months. There is full, free and unlimited chat and phone support for one year from the initial installation of the software. I have not used this support and therefore I'm unable to comment on how effective it is.

This is a decent security package - all threats are covered under one umbrella, so there is plenty of appeal for the novice PC user. However, there is plenty of free software which covers most of the bases here that will appeal to the more experienced user.

1 out of 5 stars Awful Software   November 17, 2008

This has got to be the worst software ever created. I have experienced it twice now and both times removed it and replaced it with far superior free software. It is intrusive and slow down your system. My first experience was preinstalled on a new laptop. it would not let me connect to a wifi connection. Removed Norton all ok. Second experience was on a computer that was running v.slow. Removed Norton all ok! Ran a virus check using free software and found several worms and trojans that Norton had let through. Even if Norton were giving this away with a 100 pound note in the box i still wouldn't install it on any of my computers!
