Excellent digital audio workstation software November 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Make no bones about this - Logic Express 8 is *not* for someone to get to grips with over a cup of tea and a biscuit. This is the (slightly) cut-down brother of the excellent Logic Studio software (indeed it is a superset of Logic Express plus other tools). As a result you end up with an excellent professional tool at a *very* cheap price.
This product is highly recommended for those people who are *serious* about making music, as opposed to the people who like to play about with GarageBand. It has a steep learning curve but you will be glad you persevered.
You need as powerful a machine as you can possibly get for this software, however. My iMac G5 with 2GB RAM just about does OK, but one of the more powerful Intel-based Macs is recommended.
Logic - illogical. September 5, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Unlike Final Cut Pro, Logic Express is very counter-intuitive. Garageband is MUCH easier to use, recognising inputs from mics etc. straight out of the box. With Logic, you need HEAPS of patience! Nothing works the same way twice. You have to continually restart it to make even the smallest preference changes.
And try hooking up a recommended USB mic (e.g. the Samson C01U) and you'll have no hair left! (Even Samson's online instructions are wrong!) Logic recognises certain inputs one minute and forgets them the next time you start up.
Basically, a very temperamental program which looks easy on the outside, but has many hidden and unexplained quirks. Even following Apple's own training manuals leads you up dead ends. You check everything over and over and after a few hours give up. Stick to Garageband (or Soundtrack in FCP Studio) if you want to be a musician rather than a sound engineer. Come on Apple, we know you can do better!
