2 out of 5 stars ok, but pretty expensive   November 4, 2008
I bought this thinking it was a cheap alternative to Adobe, but to be honest, its still pretty expensive compared to some other stuff on the market (which had I known about I might have chosen over this!) - but it does what it says ok! Check you need all the utlilities it provide before shelling out as you can probably find something cheaper to do the majority!

5 out of 5 stars very good and does the job as required   August 7, 2008
I think this is a very good application, and certainly very useful and makes life easier for everyone who uses a lot of PDF editing and writing. So far, I did not have any problems with compatibility, running it on Windows XP SP2. I have tried Adobe Pro, and to be honest I prefer this one. First, it is a lot cheaper, second, the outcome is exactly the same, you get really good PDF files, from Word (in my situation), in reasonably fast time, with no problems at all. It integrates with the system, and you will have the option to transfer files to PDF from right-click menu, and from the Word menu as well. It is also a viewer and editor, so you will have everything you need to deal with PDF files. I did notice some things that are not that great, but I think there is no perfect software, those are: if you are making a document with comments, it would not print (happened a few times with me) from the one-button conversion option, you have to fiddle a bit with settings. Second, it does use a lot of resource, and there are many 'hooks' installed, those are processes that run in the background to fasten the running of the application, and launching of pdf files, etc. Those are not bad, but they do use some resources. The application is not the fastest to launch, it does take a while, especially when other applications are in use. Third point, had some problems with documents in other languages, they were printed with unallocated spacing between characters, but sorted out in the original file.
In a word: excellent product, the outcome is really good and accurate, and would do a hundred times better than any other PDF free applications, the interface is neat, nice, and easy to deal with, the editing options are varied, and you would not need anything more. I would certainly recommend this application over Adobe (for the price, and ease of use), and in my opinion, it is the best application available at the moment. Very recommended.

2 out of 5 stars INVASIVE AND DAMAGING   April 6, 2008

I had to remove this software when, as described by a previous reviewer, Internet Explorer 7 started to act strangely and I also started to lose my ability to browse online.

The program itself works well - you get fast and efficient conversion. The major negative for me, however, is that this software tries to take over your entire computer. My anti-virus warned me at every Startup that this program wanted to launch its own 'Registry Controller'. It also makes itself the default programme for opening PDFs - over-writing Acrobat's rights. You get a new, dedicated Menu Bar in IE which has one single PDF button on it that you can't move to the main Menu Bar.

Lots of niggly draw-backs that forced me to simply remove this software and restore my system to an earlier Backup. I'm now looking on Amazon for a better piece of kit to convert to PDF.

Seeing an earlier critical review, which compared Converter with Acrobat, I felt I needed to set the record straight.
Converter is excellent at CONVERTING PDFs to Word etc and has saved me many hours of labourious copy and paste. The layout in the word doc is almost perfect when compared with the original pdf, unlike some other products available. The pdf creating is not as flexible as acrobat professional, so I still use Adobe to get the best of both worlds.
Customer support could be somewhat better, and there are issues when installing on a machine with Citrix installed.

1 out of 5 stars This is a very buggy application   March 18, 2008

I was using Adobe Professional Vers 6.0 prior to this and boy do I regret moving to this application. I have had numerous crashes since installing and IE7 has started to act very strange when trying to deal with PDF files. I would have to agree with the other reviewers comments on the earlier release (Vers 4.0) of this product; Nuance don't seem to have fixed anything. I'm thinking of asking for a refund but as Nuance support is incredibly poor, I'm not too optimistic. If you don't have the time or the energy to reinstall this product several times, avoid buying this and opt for something else.
