1 out of 5 stars never again Norton   October 21, 2007

I had Norton 2006 - and put up with the five minute booting up period... and the lack of speed with everything else. When my subscription lapsed (and while I was stil thinking about it), my computer just hung.... hard drive just chugging away and nothing responding. Took Norton away (in diagnostic mode) - everything fine. Never again - they may have been one of the first in PC protection, but their programmes are now far too possessive and intrusive. My opinion.... find something else; something recommended on the net.

I had previously used Systemworks 2003 and found Ghost extremely useful so I decided to upgrade to Systemworks 2006 Premier. What a complete nightmare from start to finish!!!

This product is a total resource hog. My PC is no slouch (Intel 3.2 GHz, 2 Meg PC1066 RAMBUS, 2 X 180 GB SATA Drives etc)and having build it myself I am not a beginner when it comes to IT. This product seriously extended start times and constantly caused crashes and lock-up's. Eventually Disk Doctor caused a terminal error and when I tried to restore with Ghost 10 it failed also!! Took me nearly two weeks to sortout the mess.

I have totally unistalled this product (not an easy task and requires registry editing) and reinstalled good old Ghost 2003. Went for free AV and tune up utilities and the difference is amazing. I have my PC back complete with superfast start-up and no more crashes or lock-ups.

If you take my advice you will not touch this with a barge pole. Shame really, Systemworks 2003 is a good product and I would recommend you try and get this solely for the fantastic Ghost 2003.

Hope this helps you avoid the sort of grief SY 2006 caused me.

1 out of 5 stars Dreadful   November 4, 2006

I had a horrible experience with this. "Go Back" took me straight back to 1982 - that's how my machine performed with this installed. What's worse it took hours to install and the same again to uninstall. I wasted my money on this.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry to upgrade to 2006   July 14, 2006

After having used Norton Systemworks 2003 for some years and having the annual (costly) anti-virus renewal coming up I bought Systemworks Premier 2006 instead. I regret this daily since the new version is such a resource hog and cannot be adjusted enough. For example, only one little Ghost icon on the toolbar offering me the ease of starting Norton Ghost from the toolbar, rather than from the program files menu is taking over 15MB of my system memory and cannot be disabled nor terminated! (that is just one of the tens of processes it is running) End result is that with my 1GHz Pent 512MB I can no longer watch a simple DVD without stuttering (even when disabling auto protect and such)

It also constantly warns you about things you told it not to warn about. When connecting to the internet via modem (and unreliable connection) you do not want to have automatic Windows update on but Norton will just warn you about it time and again and even once enabled it automatically, so that I found my pc dialing in when I was not around to dowload tens of megs of updates. I also cannot update anymore using a downloaded AVD file (using work pc) since somehow it now thinks that I do not have a valid AV license. Hence I have to waste much time on the phone line hoping that the connection holds long enough to download all the megabytes of virus definitions and software updates (disconnect means starting all over again).

I am completely fed up with Norton 2006 since it seems to restrict me more than that it helps me to do the things with my computer that I really want to do. Being an IT professional myself I think that they missed the target big time and for the first time I start looking for freeware utilities instead of spending all this money on something which might do what it says to do but does much more that I don't want it to do and that at a penalty of rediculous resources.

A very sorry upgrader....

1 out of 5 stars PC slowed down to snail's pace   June 8, 2006

AMD 3800+ dual core processor, 2Gb RAM. Sounds reasonably fast, doesn't it? This is my PC's spec. All tasks, even simple ones, slowed down to a crawl after loading this software. Gaming was almost impossible, logging on took about 5 mins. An antivirus scan took 36 hours to go through the whole system. Eventually uninstalled it - back to normal again straight away. Waste of money!
