Nero Burning ROM has long been heralded as the best all-round CD writing software that is available. This latest incremental release (Nero 5.5 Burning Rom CD Writing Software) adds a gamut of minor enhancements and some significant new features to ensure that it stays ahead of the pack. Where Nero excels is in its advanced feature set, tailored towards those who want to maximise the use of their CD-RW drive. Whether you are looking to overburn CD-Rs so as to squeeze more data on, write to multiple drives simultaneously, create bootable CDs, remove hiss from analogue recordings, utilise Burnproof technology or you need UDF support for packet writing CD-RWs, Nero has a powerful set of tools to help you. It is also the ideal companion for those working with multimedia files. A powerful new audio editor enables you to make CDs the way you want them to sound, with a cross fader for overlapping tracks, and the ability to remove or modify pause lengths between audio tracks. MP3 is well accommodated for, with a Media Player and encoder, though the latter is limited to encoding 30 tracks, before a separate plug-in needs to be purchased. Video creation is also a breeze with an enhanced MPEG1 encoder that supports drag and drop of AVI files to convert to VCD/SVCD format discs. For those with less experience of CD writing, who are likely to be overwhelmed by the vast array of features Nero has to offer, a Wizard system is available to manage the less involved tasks. This makes burning direct copies of CDs a simple matter of following a walkthrough of options. While these wizards have helped to make Nero more accessible, the manual could still do with improving. A CD labelling kit is supplied with the software, along with a small supply of blank labels to get you started. This is accompanied by improvements to the cover editor, which lets you make your own designs for your CDs and cases. Previous Nero users may not find enough new features from version 5 to warrant upgrading, but anyone using an earlier version, or those new to CD writing, should certainly consider getting hold of this excellent all-round package. --J.  A problem with Nero 5.5 October 14, 2002

I recently received Nero 5.5 with a new CD writer. The writer is installed on the same cable as a dvd drive.
When trying to make a copy from the dvd drive Nero is forever reading the CD in the DVD drive but never writing to the CD-R.
Fortunately I also have a scsi CD as well and Nero works fine.
Nero is OK when making a cd from files on the hard drive.
I like the idea of burnproof writing, I have previously used the Adaptec software on an HP writer (different PC) and had to slow down the writing to get a successful CD.

I wanted an alternative to Roxio Easy CD Basic 5I tried the demo of nero 5.5.
No simple instructions, 2 different burn speeds, one for CD copier and another the ordinaire burn Audio CD; niether of which it can remember by itself.Most options are not availble with most common CD burners (I have 3 recent burners on different machines) Nero takes agaes to test each track - beforre letting you choose what to do with and in which order. So you can't just choose a layout and get a coffee whilst the program does the rest. Picky picky interface with more unexplained options than you can shake a stick at and the help file helpfully responds with "No help topics associated with this action." The CD printer has an amazing selection of templates - but failed to print my Neato and Hp labels correctly - and has no relevant helpfiles. Neato II is free from Fellowes anyhow!) Overall a hassle / hassle / hassle or so slow and picky hassle. It took 45 mins to calibrate and burn my first CD compared to 18 mins in Roxio. I'll buy the platinum Roxio version instead. By the way I've a BSc. in Technology if I find the options too picky - the ordinary user with by baffled. Chris

After months of frustration with Adaptec EC4, I bit the bullet and bought Nero 5.5.Installation was easy, copying is very quick and compilations are easy enough too, although it isn't very quick. EasyCreator could never seem to record the first couple of seconds of a track. I no longer have that problem!!

When I was given an MP3-CD player I wanted to see how MP3 files sounded on it. Nero 5.5 came with my computer (running XP) so after checking out the various options for music compression I was delighted to see that I could update my software (free) and compress 30 files to mp3 format. This was so quick and easy that I paid for the compression software... and had it 30 minutes later. The program was so easy to use. I was able to compress 22 Audio CDS and burn it on to a 650 MB RW-CD. It took about 10 minutes to compress each CD and save to hard disc. 22 CDS stored on my CD taking up 641 MB !! ... With that done it Took 20 minutes to burn the 255 tracks onto the 650 MB CD. Easy to use. Fast. No glitches. Who needs a cd-interchanger in your car boot- My next car will have a CD player that reads MP3 files!!! (And the sound is perfect)

Nero Burning ROM is truly an excellent piece of software. With my CDRW I got Adaptec 4 and the best thing I ever did was upgrade to Nero. I am not a techie but no worries as Nero is so easy to use. It has all the features you need for writing CDRW and CDR's. The latest version is Windows XP compatable but the InCD UDF packet writing version you get with Nero may not be. Again no problem as they have released an XP update for it on their web site. Check out their web site as it has some very useful downloads and help imformation etc...
